How are businesses transformed with the advent of data analytics?

On Thursday, October 25, more than one hundred professionals and those interested in the world of Big Data, data mining and artificial intelligence met at the Miguel Hernández University (UMH) to enjoy the first Datacoffee, an event in which data science was the protagonist, and where the debate on its value and relevance in society was opened.  

The event was organized by the Operations Research Center of the UMH in collaboration with Teralco Big Analytics and the Degree in Business Statistics.

Throughout the morning, attendees enjoyed presentations by experts from the Big Data sector who presented success stories and shared their experience with other professionals and students who will find their place in this sector tomorrow.

in his presentation Vanessa Romero, Cajamar's business analytics manager, showed a project that explores consumption patterns during the Bonfires of San Juan in Alicante based on real data on purchases with Grupo Cajamar cards. He also highlighted five keys to success for Business Intelligence projects:

  1. listen to the expert
  2. check results
  3. prepare for change
  4. Industrialize what works
  5. Monitor the data

Thomas Cruz, head of customer intelligence at Endesa, spoke about data science use cases in energy, and informed students about the importance of continuous training and having a differentiating element to become a 5-star data scientist.

As the name suggests, the Datacoffee presentations were accompanied by cups of coffee and lunch, which also served as an informal and colloquial opportunity to networking among the attendees.

The event ended with a Roundtable in which Antonio Vicente Contreras from AI Talentum, Vanessa Romero de Cajamar, Javier Cantoral of Teralco Big Analytics, Carlos J. Gil Bellosta de circiter, Thomas Cruz of Endesa, and Pablo González Muñoz of Deloitte Digital.

The debate on the theme "How are businesses transformed with the advent of data analytics?" was opened. Carlos J Gil highlighted the importance of measurement techniques and their wide field of application in today's business world, and Javier Cantoral He referred to the importance of new ways of working, and said that "There is no perfect Big Data architecture."

In response to the question “How far will the Big Data boom go?”, Anthony Vincent Contreras underlined how much remains to be discovered by remembering the phrase “If data science were the day, we haven’t even dawned yet.”

The table moderator Pablo Gonzalez Munoz The Datacoffee concluded with the keys to Data Driven entities: business, talent, technology, analytics and new ways of working.

The first Datacoffee was a success, a day in which a look towards the future was made, pointing out the relevance of data in society. As Vanessa Romero quoted, “Without data you are just another person with an opinion” (W. Edwards Deming).
